The return of the true supergroup or just another big circle jerk.
No just a bunch of guys remembering what being in a rock band is all about 8/10
OK so if you get Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones together people are going to call it a supergroup, and in some respects they are in that each member is well known, however a supergroup is more about the ego’s of the band members rather than what a band should be about.
In this case the members seem to just out to have fun and really not behave like adults and surely that is what it should be about, in terms of the music each person brings something to the mix in the case of jp its the led zep heavy base line which is evident throughout the album.
In truth sometimes this doesn’t gel well with Homme’s stoner rock inspired vocals but taken as a whole the album hangs together with the aid of Dave Grohl who seems still to be seeking the thrill of new projects.
There are a few standout tracks on the album and a few also ran’s but that can only be expected with any album, for pure QOTSA influence Mind Eraser really is hard to beat fast urgent and kind of dirty.
New Fang is a great lead track much more complex and really draws on the influence of the groups members from led zep blues rock to stoner rock and back, it remains to be seen if they can pull this song off live when they play in the UK in the coming month.
As for Elephant its the dirtiest combination of Homme’s inspired stoner rock and Grohl – JP heavy blues rock in parts gutteral in its base line and as such a standout track
